Diy Siding Repairs: Supplies And Step-by-step

By:

There are a handful of house siding projects that you can complete yourself without paying big bucks for a professional contractor. These are projects with a short list of supplies and a limited number of steps that most homeowners with some DIY experience can perform.
1. Apply Stone Veneer Siding
This project dresses up the look of aging siding. The good part is that there are only three steps to complete: (1) create a moisture barrier and add lathe, (2) apply mortar and attach stones, and (3) fill in the gaps. In fact, you're doing little more than fitting the pieces together like a puzzle for a dazzling finish.
2. Clean Vinyl Siding
This more common DIY project should be performed at least twice every year. Use a mild cleaning agent and a soft bristled brush for best results. Rinse with a medium-powered garden hose spray. For stubborn stains, treat with a goo-removal solution available at your local home and garden store.
3. Repainting Wood Siding
Nothing beats a fresh coat of paint for repurposing wood siding. Sand the old paint off of your siding with a hand-sander. Follow sanding with a good cleaning to remove grit and sand shavings. Then, use an exterior spackling compound to fill in holes. Caulk cracks where the siding meets the trim. Then finish with a couple of coats of quality exterior paint.
4. Repairing Holes or Damaged Portions of Siding
The primary requirement to complete this siding job is extra siding planks. Simply pry off the damaged piece, and reattach a new plank using wood nails and a hammer. A zip tool restores the tight seal between planks.
You can download specific instructions for any DIY siding project or consult your local home and garden outlet for focused assistance.
