Divorce Advice: How To Protect Yourself During The Process

By:

One of the hardest things about your marriage breaking up is having to listen to divorce advice from others. This is especially true to those who do not even want a divorce, but find there is no other choice. Regardless, the fact is that you do not want to take any advice in the beginning, except for the recommendation that you find a good lawyer. Once you hire an attorney, he or she can advise you on what you can do to protect yourself during the process.

The first big of divorce advice that you may receive from your attorney is to document anything that you brought into the marriage, such as family heirlooms. Truthfully, in most cases it does not matter that you received them prior to marriage or after, only that they were passed down to you from one of your own family members. After you determine which items are family heirlooms, you may want to actually remove them from your home and put them in a safe place to store.

Your attorney may also recommend that you document some of the larger and more expensive items in your home that were acquired in your marriage. The best way to handle these items is to take pictures of them in your home, attach the photo to the receipt, if you have one, and then, have them appraised.

Of course, the personal items that you have acquired during the marriage will also need to be removed from the home. Your attorney can advise you on what items that would categorized as personal. Community items should be left in place until the court decides who is to take ownership of that property.

The biggest mistake that you can make when going through a divorce is to listen to divorce advice from others. While the above are just a few examples of what your attorney may advise you on, you always want to verify with them on what your rights are before the marriage is legally terminated to make sure that you are completely protected.
