Steeped in history, Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and offers one a chance to soak up the citys rich cultural heritage. Known for its harbour, the city witnessed many pivotal events during the American Revolution and gives history buffs and visitors a chance to explore some of these historical sites. One such attraction is the Old North Church.
Constructed in 1723, the Old North Church is the oldest of its kind in the city and was very much a part of the American Revolution. This historic building was the citys second Anglican Church and is best known for the role it played during Paul Reveres great ride on that fateful day on April 18, 1775. Knowing that General Gage, the Commander of the British forces was planning a secret night march to Lexington and Concord, Paul Revere and the resistance force known as The Sons of Liberty set about to warn fellow patriots of the impending danger.
While the plan was for Revere to ride through the towns and warn the people, he also asked the sexton of the Old North Church, Robert Newman, to climb up to the steeple and hold aloft two lanterns. This was a signal that the British were on the march (one lantern was the code for an attack by sea) and helped to warn the patriots stationed in Charlestown. And so it was then at 10 PM on 1775, Robert Newman made his way up the 14-story steeple under the cover of darkness and gave the designated signal.
Known as the Christ Church in the City of Boston, the Old North is home to such historical architectural highlights as elaborate chandeliers, box pews, a 191 foot tall steeple and eight bells which are considered the oldest of its kind in North America. One can also take a leisurely stroll at the church gardens which has been planted with a variety of plants that were a common site during the 18th century.
