Discovering The Calming Life Of The Amish Community

By:

The Amish community has long been admired by everyone as well as a great example of family life and happiness. This makes sense as soon as you realize that the family is the Amish community's number one priority. They take care of their elderly as it is seen as shameful to do otherwise and having children is a great blessing from the Lord. When an individual has chosen to be baptized into the Amish faith, it is expected that they will marry and have children. Though members of the Amish faith are only allowed to marry members of the same faith, they may be from another community or church.

Every family has someone to lead the way. In the Amish family, the father is the head of the household which puts the responsibilities of discipline, wage earning, family decisions and the spiritual aspects in his hands. While the mother of the family may help with these decisions, her primary obligations remain in the home. Cleaning, cooking, laundry and caring for the children are all expected of her. Also among these chores - she will have a small garden and livestock as well as making sure their children are completing their chores as well.

Every meal is a family event with every member of the family present. After they finish their meals, the men and boys will work in the shops and out in the fields while the women and daughters work clean up and work around the house. By following this order, the children are not only able to bond with their parents and siblings, but they are also able to learn the skills they will need in the future when they have families of their own. Unfortunately it may become necessary at times for the fathers to travel to the city to work in order to support their family.

Schooling in the Amish community is also different from public or private schooling. Until the children are in the eighth grade - they will all go to the same classes, generally in a one room school house. After they have graduated the eighth grade, they will stay closer to their family in order to learn the ways of the Amish lifestyle and the skills that will be necessary such as child rearing, housekeeping, carpentry and farming. When the child reaches the age of sixteen they are allowed more freedom than before.

The elderly in the Amish communities are revered and taken care of very well in their homes. They are given an apartment within the farmhouse, including a kitchen and also have a horse and buggy so they are able to have the freedom and independence they desire.
