Discover Why It Is Important To Have Enough Protein In Your Diet

By:

The standard western diet provides enough protein to sustain the body which makes protein deficiencys quite rare. However, there are national requirements that are specific to particular groups and ages of people.

As you get older you manufacture proteins in the body less effectively. This results in lower muscle content in the body while the amount of body fat either remains the same or rises. That is why it is common to hear that muscles turn to fat as you get older.

A lack of protein in the body can result in deficiencies in the bodys muscles mass which will result in reduced strength. Other effects due to lack of protein can result in thinning hair, brittle nails, skin lesions and a lack of iron and albumin in the blood.
For the body to produce new red blood cells it needs protein. The average life cycle of blood cells is around four months. The affects of a lack of protein can be starkly seen in people who are starving. A common appearance is the enlarged round belly which is caused by fluid retention due to protein deficiencies. Other side effects are wasting muscles due to the body absorbing the muscle tissue because there is no body fat.

People who need to increase their intake of protein are pregnant women. Also, people who become injured will need to increase their daily intake of protein to assist the body in repairing itself.

People who have been in serious car crashes where they have lost a lot of blood will need extra protein to repair and protect existing muscle tissue and to produce the new red blood cells to repair the damage. Protein is essential were injuries sustained by burns or cuts because it helps the body to knit the skin tissue together and to grow new skin cells around the wound.

Medical Research has also revealed that people who exert their bodies more than normal need to take more protein to help the body replenish itself. This is particularly true for professional athletes who need to take a well balanced diet that it is also high in proteins. The extra proteins help the body repair the muscles as a result of over exertion. Body builders also eat a diet that is high in protein as this helps to build muscle mass and strength to lift heavy weights.

Too much protein can also have adverse affects that can lead to indigestion problems, gout and kidney stones.
