The Isle of Wight is an island and a British county situated in the English Channel, just a few kilometers from the south coast and is separated from the mainland of Britain by the Solent in which regular ferry services operate. Since ages it is popular for its magnificent natural beauty and sailing, which is world famous.

The world's first hovercraft was built here, so are the space rockets tested and developed here. Its brief status was a nominally independent kingdom, of the fifteenth century.

The best and biggest rock music event of its time, Isle of Wight Festival was held in 1970 here. The island has a distinguished wildlife and is also one of the prime locations of dinosaur's fossils in Europe. It was a part of Hampshire, but after 1974 it was reconstituted as a ceremonial county and non metropolitan which had its own Lord Lieutenant and its name was pasted as a postal county. It is also the most densely populated Parliamentary constituency of UK.

After the Romans left Britain, the island was attacked and looted by several rulers. In 686, it was the last part of England that converted to Christianity. It became a part of England under the Saxon rule. The Normans later assigned the position of Lord of the Isle of Wight.Henry VIII, who flourished the Royal Navy and its settled base at Portsmouth; in process he built forts on the island at East and West Cowes, Sandown and Yarmouth. After the Spanish attack by its fleet of ships in 1588, the threat by Spanish continued and the outer defenses of Carisbrooke Castle were created between 1597 and 1602.

During the civil war in England King Charles fled to Isle of Wight thinking that he will be welcomed there, but was stunned to see himself imprisoned there. Queen Victoria later made Osborne House that is situated here as her summer home for several years and consequently it became a popular holiday resort for bold and fashionable Victorians and members of European royal families. It was during this time that world's first radio station was set up at Needles battery on the western side by Marconi in 1897. It played a major role during World War II, testing and developing various types of ammunition at its site.

In 1970, Isle of Wight Festival show was rocking, both for being the last public appearance by Jimi Hendrix and for the number of watchers attending it, by over 600,000. The Festival was once again held in 2002 and has now become an annual festival.

The Isle of Wight is a diamond shape that is spread in an area of 380 km2 or 147 sq miles. On to the western side the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers slightly more than half of the total island.
