Discover The Dam In Amsterdam

By:

Over time the name Amstel Dam transformed into the modern name of the city Amsterdam. That little tale is just one of the many interesting things that Amsterdam has to share with you.

The Dam Square: The origins of Amsterdam really start in the Dam Square where the river runs through and the Amstel Dam was built. Today Dam Square is home to not only the Amstel Dam, but is the heart of the whole city. It is where you will find the Royal Palace and the War Memorial. The Square is home to street performers, tourist centers and leads you to all the other popular attractions in the city.

The two main roads leading from the Square, the Damrak and the Rokin, and the square itself separate the city into the Old Side and the New Side. Each side of town has its own personality, atmosphere and interesting attractions.

The Main Attractions: Starting your tour of Amsterdam there is the world famous Red Light District, De Wallen. This area is notorious for the red light windows, sex shops and other adult oriented attractions. Perhaps ironically, in the center of this district is the oldest church in Amsterdam, Oude Kerk. Also in this area are Amsterdams Chinatown, Zeedijk and Njeuwmarkt square with medieval city gates.

For some fun nightlife you can visit Leidse Square and Rembrandt Square which both serve as major party districts and are alive and vibrant at night. If you prefer a more serene environment then visit Jordaan. Jordaan is the greenest place is Amsterdam. It is a 17th century neighborhood where you will see houseboats that have been converted into homes right on the land.

Like to shop? Then head to De Pijp where you will find the biggest market in Amsterdam, the Albert Cuypstraat. Located in an ethnic melting pot, this market is a great place to shop for almost anything you could desire.

For a little culture you can visit the museum district, Museumplein. Here you will find the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. These museums pay tribute tot he areas most famous artists, Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Don't forget to also tour the many canals in Amsterdam. These canals create a sort of maze that can be confusing to tourists. Just remember that they run in alphabetical order and that should help you keep your wits about you and keep you from getting lost.

Planning your trip: As you can see there are many things to see and do in Amsterdam. You won't likely have a minute to wonder what to do next since you will be going from one attraction to another. Planning your vacation to Amsterdam should start with booking your accommodations. Try booking them online. By planning out your trip online you can save yourself a lot of time and money.
