Beach party enthusiasts from across the globe flock to the sun-kissed shores of Hikkaduwa come July for one reason and one reason alone, to attend the most anticipated beach fest in all of South Asia. Affectionately dubbed the Hikka Beach Fest this annual melee of sun, sand, sound and revelry has become the focal point of this tiny seaside towns yearly itinerary. Taking place on the shores of Hikkaduwa beach on the 29th, 30th and 31st of July, this year the fourth instalment of this annual beach party is set to be the biggest one yet. Having evolved in both scale and scope over the past four years this highly successful Sri Lankan franchise has become one of the regions most coveted events.
Kicking off on Friday night, the first night of the festival will pit the finest drummers in the region against some of the globes grooviest Djs in a musical extravaganza like no other. In a classic battle between man and machine these two diverse factions will create an electrifying party atmosphere that will keep the revellers toes tapping till sun up. Acts that are set to take the sage by storm at this years festival include Yves Larock, Daniel Suwenda, Edele Andaya, Ben Davitt and Naadro while the Hikkaduwa Drummers, Thriloka, Jananath and Dj Shyam are also part of the impressive line-up of artists.
Saturday will also bring some of the best local and international bands to the forefront as the psychedelic light shows illuminate the dance floors which are none other than the white, powdery beaches of Hikkaduwa. The first ever Roti Festival will also be kicked off at this years event with mouth-watering chocolate banana rotis and the avocado honey flavoured rotis taking centre stage. All of the citys major roti shops are set to take part in this contest that will also award special prizes for rotis with the innovative, creative and delicious tastes. Sporting events such as beach volleyball, beach football and beach rugby will also take place on Saturday for those with a hankering for athletic exertion.
Sunday, the final day of the festival will serve as a relaxing and rejuvenating experience after the heavy partying of the days past. Soul and jazz music will fill the airwaves of the party capital as another successful beach fest comes to a close.
