Discover How Come Americans Rack Up So Much Debt

Credit card debt and other unsecured debts have come to be a large problem for the majority of families in the U.S. People have become to used to just using their plastic card to get whatever it is they want, whenever they want it, without sincerely having the income to pay for it. Below I will list the top reasons that Americans wind up becoming so swamped with credit card debt.

1. Impulsive Buying and Harmful Spending Habits!

Buying on impulse represents a lack of self-discipline. People will basically stumble across something in a shop and pay for it on their credit card, because they just can't wait to get whatever item it is they want to purchase, with no regard as to whether they have the cash for it then or not. Credit cards feed into buying on impulse that is what the cards are there for to gratify our need for instant gratification. You know there is a proverb "patience is a virtue" if some individuals kept to that principle debt would not be an issue for them.

Poor spending behaviors run along the same line as buying on impulse. Some individuals just spoil themselves way to much in life. For example, somebody might end up at a four star restaurant, and instead of ordering a chicken sandwich and fries, they order the prime rib, the appetizer or two, the happy hour special, and the ice cream special. Par for the course they charge it on their plastic. Now I am not saying that to splurge every once in a while is bad, but for some people it's an everyday occurance. And these bad spending behaviors can blow up to a mountain range of debt very fast.

My Advice: Next time you are at a store, any kind of store, and you are intending to make a charge with your credit card. Think twice about the items you are going to buy and think to one's self 'Are these items wants or needs?' If you find yourself purchasing an item that is more of a want then a need put it back, and promise yourself when you have "real money" not a plastic card, to come back and buy that merchandise for yourself without charging your card. The essential point here is to distinguish between wants and needs, your groceries are a need, your soap is a need, the video game is a want, the brand new pair of boots are a want. A tune up for your car is a need, a turbocharger for your car is a want.

2. Accepting Too Many Credit Cards!

This is the next big contributor to individuals getting into debt problems. People simply just can't reject the credit card offers they receive in the mail. Debtors get these offers in the mail saying your pre-approved and your line of credit is 5k. For a lot of people this is too much to handle and they will graciously accept every offer and promptly charge on them.

My advice:Ignore these offers, they are only going to hurt you! These offers are not necessary. Think of every one of these credit solicitations you receive in the mail as a giant financial time bomb waiting to blow you out of the water. The only way to turn them off is by placing them promptly into the trash. Learn to resist the new credit solicitations you do not need them, this cannot be stressed enough.

3. Cash Advances!

This is a seriously large factor in people piling up debt. It is just so easy to go to the ATM and take out cash against your card. Becoming seriously addicting to individuals and becomes a huge reason why they accumulate such large debt amounts.

My Advice: Stay away from cash advances. This basically is just about the same as just paying on your card, you still pay interest and rack up debt.
