Named Maungawhau in native Maori, Mount Eden in Auckland is a fascinating natural phenomenon that also serves as the highest point in the great state. Towering above the surrounding landscapes at a height of 196 meters the chief attraction at this monumental peak is of course its 50 meter deep crater. It is believed that several separate lava currents formed the looming mountain in the shape of a massive protruding scoria cone of three overlying cones of which the southernmost point is identified as Mount Eden. Named after the city's premier earl George Eden it is difficult to believe that this curious rock formation was caused by a number of volcanic eruptions that took place over 15,000 years ago.
No Trip to Mount Eden would be complete without a stopover at Mount Eden Village which in the past was a bustling Victorian hamlet with a host of Victorian establishments to its name. Some of these structures still remain on the corner of Stokes Road and Mt Eden Road and the corner of Essex Street and Mt Eden Road. Famed for its specialty food shops the area also come alive during the month of march for the annual arts festival which sees the storefronts of the village display art works from local artists leading up to the competitions.
