Discount Magazine Subscriptions For Father's Day Gifts

By:

Most Fathers Day gifts reflect fathers favorite pastimes. A great addition to any hobby is a year-long subscription to a magazine that provides valuable information. Popular Fathers Day gifts are tools, sporting equipment and gift baskets. This year with the waning economy consumers are expected to spend less on Fathers Day gifts. Many people will opt for more practical gifts.

There are many options for great magazines for Dads. For the Dad that loves sports there is Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest, Baseball Digest, ESPN the Magazine, Outdoor World and more; for the Dad who loves cars there is Motor Trend, Road & Track, Car and Driver and Automobile. For the Dad that loves outdoor adventures there is Adventure Kayak, National Geographic Adventure, Outside and Backpacker.

Still, there are many other magazines for all types of hobbies including hunting, woodworking, hot rods and more.

Two women are behind the creation of Fathers Day as an official U.S. holiday. The first was Grace Golden Clayton who inspired the very first Father's Day celebration, which was held on July 5, 1908 as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in West Virginia. Mrs. Clayton suggested the honoring of fathers after a deadly mining explosion killed many of the towns fathers.

Sonora Smart Dodd is the second woman behind the creation of Fathers Day. Like Anna Jarvis, who created Mothers Day, Sonora Smart Dodd led the efforts to create Father Day. Mrs. Dodd was inspired to create Fathers Day because of her own father, who raised six children by himself. Initially Mrs. Dodd wanted to celebrate Fathers Day on June 5, her fathers birthday; however, organizers did not have enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. In Spokane, the first Father's Day celebration occurred on June 10, 1910 at the YMCA.

Though the popularity of Fathers Day spread quickly and was supported by William Jennings Bryan and President Woodrow Wilson it took a long time to become an official U.S. holiday. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday but it wasnt until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June; still Fathers Day was not officially recognized until 1972 under President Nixon.

Father's Day is celebrated in many countries and on many different dates. Other countries that celebrate Fathers Day include Argentina, Costa Rica, Germany, Thailand and Taiwan.
