Direct Marketers: Why You Shouldn't Send Junk Mail

By:

Nobody wants to get junk in the mail, nobody wants to get junk at all. That's why you need to make sure that your direct mail marketing campaign isn't junk. You want to be careful to make sure that you create a mailer that is attractive and will get your customers' attention. You want them to hate the very thought of throwing your mailer into the trash can. So, how exactly do you go about creating a direct mailer that has value for your potential customer?

There are three important aspects of a piece of direct mail that will separate the junk from the valuable direct mail campaign. First of all, you want your mailing to be aesthetically pleasing - in other words, it needs to look nice. You direct mail advertising should be printed on high quality paper and look classy.

The old "yellow envelope covered in red arrows" look is becoming dated and is like a giant red flag with the words "junk mail" written all over it, so forget the old-school stuff and create a new direct mail campaign with class. Simple things such as making sure you use a nice font and include a teaser on the outside of the envelope will make it more likely to get opened by your prospect.

Next, in order to make your prospect want to keep and more importantly, respond to your mailing, you want to make sure that your mailer contains a valuable offer. Think about the value you are giving to the prospect. Free gifts are always good selling points. You can offer a gift with purchase for a limited time or a valuable discount coupon with a specific expiration date to promote the prospect to act quickly while your offer is fresh on their mind.

Most importantly of all for a successful direct marketing campaign is making sure you send your direct mail advertising to a targeted mailing list. Nothing will make your mailer look more like junk than sending it to people who are not good candidates for your product or service.

That is why it is so important to make sure to purchase a mailing list that fits your demographics and even beyond that, you can purchase a mailing list of people who have a tendency to purchase your type of product or service and those who have a history of responding to direct mail advertising such as yours.
