The history of Saudi Arabia is like hidden treasures not known to many. A visit to the historic city of Dir'aiyah would give one a glimpse of this ancient culture. A city that speaks volumes on the creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a plethora of well-preserved elements from the past that range from typical clay buildings and monuments to so much more.
An extension of Riyadh, this location can be found roughly 11kms from the city centre. Dir'aiyah which once served as a capital to the first Saudi Dynasty was also home to Saudis first Royal Family. The Turaif district in Diraiyah, named a UNESCO world heritage site is the main attraction of the region. On both sides of a narrow valley in the region (Wadi Hanifa), an array of mud brick structures and ruins can be seen which are separated into three districts, Ghussaibah, Turaif and Al-Mulaybeed.
The bottom of the highest altitude in Turaif is easily accessible by foot and includes part of the mud bricked city wall. The more modern part of the city can be found a bit lower and has an array of lovely gardens, traditional palm groves, estates and farms. A popular dam among locals known as Al Ilb can also be found further north. Diraiya is home to a range of historic artefacts that must be visited. A number of ancient royal palaces including the Salwa and Saad Bin Saud Palace can be found with traditional Arabian architecture that depicts graceful culture and style. Another interesting building is the Turaif Guest and Bath House, popular for its remarkable engineering with unique waterproofing methods. Finally do not miss the picturesque, historic mosque constructed during the reign of the first Mohamed bin Saud.
Saudi Arabia is well known for its Islamic significance and is the birth place of the holy prophet Muhammed who founded the religion of Islam.
