Digital Signage Software For Golfers

By:

Of all the markets that are open to digital signage software firms, sports may be the very last one on the list, but there are applications for digital signage software and golfers. Golfers themselves may not be familiar with the term digital signage, but they have surely heard of, and probably seen, handheld devices that use GPS technology to determine yardages and otherwise execute better course management. Nowadays, you may not even need to buy a separate handheld hardware component. Golfer software programs can now be purchased through smart device apps. Relatively speaking, these software applications are still in their infancy as golfers, golf courses, and the sport's governing bodies are still unsure about the best way to use this technology.

Digital Signage Software for Golfers
Digital signage software isn't marketed to individual golfers but rather is embedded in the handheld devices that show the yardages and the layout of individual holes. These yardages include not just measurements to the green, but bunkers, water hazards, trees, mounds, and other significant features of individual holes. So far, the response from golfers has been mostly positive and continues to be more so as the software and GPS technology irons out any kinks in the system. Few things are as frustrating to a golfer as hitting a seemingly perfect shot only to watch the ball come up a few yards short of the target due to poorly estimated yardages.

Digital Signage for Golf Courses
Many golf courses have started encouraging golfers to use this technology, or even providing these signage systems through screens embedded in their golf carts. In some cases, these golf courses may even commission their own software programs to control exactly what information is and isn't available to players. The priority for many golf courses is to implement selective GPS and yardage technology to increase the pace of play. Having yardages at immediate disposal for golfers tends to cut down on searching out various yard markers, but fretting over the distance of every single feature on the golf course may actually slow the pace of play.

Digital Signage and Golf's Governing Bodies
In 2006, the USGA determined that these yardage measuring systems would be permissible when a local rule so allows it. In other words, it's up to the individual golf courses. But, even still, there were certain restrictions placed on their use and information. Only yardage measurements are allowed and not the measurement of wind speed, direction, ground slope, or temperature, as these measurements were thought to change the nature of the game. Likewise, most golf tournaments still ban the use of even yardage measuring GPS signage systems, although players and caddies may use the technology to confirm yardages during practice rounds that take place ahead of the actual tournament.
