Digital Accessibility

By:

One of the things about the internet is that it makes nearly everything accessible to everyone. Everyone can be a publisher or published author, music, television shows, videos and more can all be streamlined and viewed online for no cost at all. Great right? Well perhaps for the viewers, but artists and their producers put a lot of time and effort into creating their work that everyone is enjoying so much for free.

This was a major issue for the music industry a few years back. Suddenly sites like Kazaa were popularising the music industry and people around the world were downloading music for free - which means no royalties to the artist or the record label. And who was going to go out and buy a CD when they could just get the music online for free? And then of course mp3 players made it even easier for people to access their music on a portable player.

Today the publishing industry has been doing everything in their power to ensure that they don't face the same issues as the music industry did. Ereaders have been created by several companies and aren't going anywhere, content needs to be digitised to make it accessible for new formats and publishers need to be agreeable if they want to continue moving forward and profiting off of new formats, content distribution methods and user engagement. What they don't want though is for their books to leak on the internet and for people to be able to download them for free and preventing this from occurring is something that they will have to continue working on for a while.

However, publishers are doing other things to take advantage of the new formats and platforms available. They are releasing chapter samplers, teasers, interactive ebook content, and other social activities to bridge the gap between writer and readers. 'Transmedia Storytelling' is the new name that has been given to the integration of entertainment experiences across a range of different media platforms. The idea is to use channels, their communities and functions to communicate different elements of the same story. One example of transmedia storytelling is Pottermore - a unique online experience from J.K Rowling. Pottermore will offer Harry Potter fans the chance to offer their ideas and suggestions about plot and characters while interacting with the author. It is a concept that keeps the story alive and fans engaged.

Digital is not something that artists should fear but instead embrace as it presents so many opportunities for them to take their work in many directions. But artists and their producers should be prudent against the open accessibility that comes with the internet if they want to maintain ownership of their work.
