Different Types Of Primers

By:

In the earlier article we understood the importance of primers. It is very obvious that primers attain and maintain adhesion to the substrate. At Calgary painters we understand the added benefit of sealing & obtaining a uniform surface of the surface to be painted on.

In this article let us get to know the various primers commonly available in the market. Of all the various types hyped, there are basically only two types of primers based on their composition. Solvent-based primers that also called as oil-based primers & Latex primers. Each has their own purpose & application strategy.

As the name implies, Calgary painting companies use solvent-based primers for solvent-thinned paints or alkyd paints & latex primers are meant for latex paints or water-based paints. However, the selection is not so simple. Each of the primers has their own strengths.

If painting on wood, Calgary residential painters will advise you to opt for Oil base primers since they are known to have exceptional characteristics to arrest tannin bleeding on redwood, cedar and other high extractive type woods. The simple reason being tannin's are water-soluble & as latex-paints are water-based, they will not be able to effectively stop the bleeding in severe cases. Even though latest paints are lauded as the next best thing, oil-base primers can work wonders in less than ideal work conditions, like presence of chalking or excessively cool climates.

The latex primers are ideal for moisture prone areas. The simple reason being, they breath water vapor much better than alkyd paints. Latex paints are sometimes used by Calgary painting contractors, if they feel the wood has residual stress since latex paints retain their flexibility & handle wood-stress much better. However, latex paints are prone to peeling if used on hardboard since they do not stabilizer the wax in hardboard & hence cannot form a strong bond.

Finally, the primers available these days can be easily mixed with pigment to match the top-coat. However, as a simple word of caution, no matter what the primer, it is advised to apply the paint within 24-48 hours on the primer to achieve best possible adhesion.
