Different Types Of Natural Stone Paving

By:

There are lots of different kinds of natural stone paving available in todays market. Four of the most common kinds include limestone paving, sandstone paving, granite paving and slate paving. Of these four, sandstone paving is more copiously used than any of the others. Sandstone paving has a varying color range from black and grey through to greens, reds and browns to sandy yellow.

Natural stone paving slabs can cost quite a lot more than the concrete man-made slabs that are manufactured in vast amounts. The process of nature combined with time has created natural stone that has been used as a construction and paving material for thousands of years. Natural stone paving is still used for many of our construction projects. Man-made concrete paving will often weather and wilt away much faster than natural stone.

Natural stone paving is used to create our paths, patios, walkways and driveways. It is normally extracted from the ground via quarrying and mining. People not only use natural stone paving on external projects but also use it to decorate their homes. It can be used for flooring and also tiling walls, usually in the kitchen or bathroom. The natural character and wide range of colors makes for an exquisite blend unavailable in man-made materials.

The most common shape that natural stone paving is made is that of squares and rectangles. Randomly sized paving slabs are known as random size paving and sizes that are all the same are known as gauged size paving. Random paving creates a random pattern when layed and gauged paving creates a uniform pattern because the slabs are all the same size. Irregular shaped paving such as triangular or diamond shaped is know as crazy paving and is often made from broken paving too small to be cut square. Small cubed paving known as cobblestones can also be used to create amazing patterned areas of paving.

Naturally formed layers known as strata are riven or split to reveal a rough natural surface on the paving stones, this riven surface is totally unique in character. Riven paving has to be hand made because of the different pressures at which a layer takes to split. Splitting paving blocks is a skilled job that only experienced quarry-men can do. Small metal wedges and chisels are forced into the stone blocks along their natural strata layers.

Smooth surfaced stone paving is made with the use of large stone saws with diamond tipped blades. The natural stone blocks are sliced into slabs and then honed off for a smooth finish. Sawn stone paving slabs are available in any thickness, unlike the riven paving slabs that can only be split to certain differing thicknesses allowed by the natural strata layers.
