Different Rifle Scopes For Different Scenarios

Recently, sportsmen have increasingly been trending toward optical attachments for rifles that use high levels of magnification. It is not unusual to find magnification rates of 6-24x, or occasionally higher. While "the bigger the better" concept is widely conventional in areas like vehicle engines, it's often a bad move for sportsmen to follow this theory in their sport hunting.

The past norm for rifle scope magnification, at least when hunting deer, was 3-9x. Employing a power of 3x, sportsmen are able to accurately take short distance shots at nearer than 50 yards, a common distance when deer hunting. Nowadays, however, it's increasingly typical for sportsmen to utilize 6x to 18x magnification, sometimes higher - but the higher the scope magnification rate, the narrower the field of view. Having 6x as the minimum magnification level, it's basically impossible focus on moving target at thirty yards.

Using a 6x power level, a deer would appear six times bigger than it would when viewed with the naked eye. At a distance of roughly thirty yards, a sportsman is going to be gazing through his rifle scope at a patch of fur, which makes it basically impossible to zero in on a point to aim at. Not only do sportsmen in this position discover that they are zoomed in too near to the animal, but sight blocking items are magnified at the same rate too. Brush and trees are frequently encountered obstructions in deer hunting conditions, so a sportsman hunting a deer that is already over-magnified now has to deal with a three-inch stick that just became a deer's eighteen-inch defensive weapon.

Now, while it's plain to see that in wooded situations, dealing with smaller distances, a scope with high magnification is not always optimal, that does not mean these rifle scopes don't have a use. High magnification rifle scopes are great for open shooting environments that are largely free of obstructions, and targets are at 250 yards or greater. Ranges of rifle scope power of 3-9x work suitably in circumstances like these. Sportsmen can step it up to 18-24x rifle scopes when the shooting distance increases to 400 yards or more. Quite a bit of what goes into deciding on the perfect scope is personal preference, but shooting environment is equally significant, if not more so.

Nowadays there are many more models of rifle scopes to choose from than ever, and rifle scope manufacturers are developing an growing number of high magnification rifle scopes. The Zeiss Conquest rifle scope line-up, as an example, boasts 64 scopes, and over half of them have a 3.5x magnification level as their lowest level. Even the reasonably priced Burris and Bushnell rifle scopes are now available in 20x magnification and higher. Leupold rifle scopes are widely popular, and they offer a scope with a range of 8.5x to 25x.

The large selection of scopes available to choose from these days is terrific, but sportsmen need to shop wisely, based on shooting conditions and environment. Remember, "more power" doesn't always translate to "more useful".
