Different Kinds Of Vertical Platform Lifts

To many, the front steps of the house may be seen as just another set of stairs, but to people who are in wheelchairs this can be seen as a very large obstacle. Often the front steps are too steep to install one of the ready-built ramps and so you must either invest in a custom built ramp or a vertical platform lift.

Vertical platform lifts greatly improve the mobility of people who use wheelchairs or other mobility vehicles. They are like having your own personal elevator installed on the front of your home, and at a fraction of the cost. A platform is lifted vertically the distance of the stairs and this platform is used to carry the individual. The distance that they can span varies by model. For instance the AmeriGlide Tall Tower has a standard lifting height of 96, but can be configured to lift as high as 144.

Vertical platform lifts can be easily installed in most homes, but require that there is a secure base for the unit to rest on. The base should be made out of wood or concrete for best effect. In instances where the vertical platform lift will be spanning distances that are greater than 52, you should also secure the platform lift to the wall as well. Some portable models do not require that you secure it to the ground and are designed to be simply rolled into place. While these portable units are very convenient, they usually can not lift as high as other types of platform lifts.

While most of these units require some assembly there is at least one that comes fully assembled. This is AmeriGlides Residential Vertical Platform Lift. It can support up to 750 pounds and has a standard lifting height of 28, but can be configured to span as much as 72.
