By:

Anyone that is in college or soon to be heading that way needs to address their health care coverage. It is important for general health as well as it is required at many colleges and universities. There are options available to students that have certain requirements. Many people will have become to old to be covered by their parents plan as they are going to college. Some can still be covered but are outside of the region that they can access health care because of the HMO coverage area.

Many schools have their own group insurance plans as well as clinics for students. This is nice except when school is not in session, or if the student transfers to another school. This is the main reason that student health insurance should be from a source independent of the school.

This same type of insurance will go with you after you are finished with school. You hope to find a job in your field pretty quickly, but it does sometimes take time. You will be able to keep your student health insurance as long as you continue with making the premium payments.

The insurance is not just for those times that school is in session. It is year round and is good for traveling within the US as well. There are certain PPO and HMO plans that don't give coverage anywhere other than a small area. Insurance that travels where you do is a good idea. That particular issue is one that should be checked before signing up for anything.

To get started with this type of insurance there are a few requirements. One of the main ones are that you have to be in school full time and you have to be under 30 years of age. After that you can keep the insurance for as long as you continue to make the premium payments.
