Different Colored Laser Pointers Have Differentiated Features

By:

It seems that laser pointers have become indispensable part of large-scale presentations, lectures and speech. As we all know, there are mainly four colors laser pointers on the market today, that is, red/red-orange, yellow laser, green, blue and violet. Blue laser always offers the most powerful light while the red usually provide the weakest. Do you want to know more about the difference of those four-colored laser pens?

Red Laser Pointer Pen
Great for presentations, general use, dog or cat toy, annoying the neighbors, red laser pointers are the simplest pointers. The first red laser pointers, which were bulky, were launched in the early 1980s. Red lasers today are compact, offering convenience to carry around. Red laser always operates at 650nm and today some models power reach 671 nm. These laser need to make use of DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) to obtain higher beam quality and narrower spectral bandwidth.

Yellow Laser
In the last few years, yellow lasers could offer operation at 593.5 nm. Although they apply the same technology as red lasers to generate light, red types sum together two lasing lines through a nonlinear crystal. This procedure makes these gadgets are not so stable and efficient than other color lasers. Yellow laser output range is from 1 mW to about 10 mW.

Blue Laser
Blue lasers, with wavelength much shorter than red lasers, were available on the market around 2006. Blue lasers are made with DPSS type frequency-doubled devices. The high output power blue uses BBO crystals as frequency doublers while the low power adopts KTP. Some blue are made with InGaN semiconductors, which is able to produce the light without frequency-doubling. Be careful when you use blue laser, as its powerful wavelength could hurt the Retina of our eyes. Blue lasers are still very new in the market and their prices are usually higher.

Green Laser
Appeared on the market circa 2000, green laser pointers are preferred by astronomers, as their night visible capability allows astronomers to easily point out stars and constellations.

A green laser pointer is about 60 times brighter than a red laser type. A green laser emitting 532 nm wavelength always defeat a 650 nm red laser. Green laser pointers also differ in output powers and the 5 mW green are the safest to use.

With all the information, have you figured out what color laser pointer you want to buy and which laser is the most dangerous? Dont point you pointers directly on someones face or eyes they hurt our eyes.
