Different Cigar Rolling Techniques

By:

Whenever you see cigars and cigar accessories, what do you really see? Some people only see a logo or a color. Some are so excited to be smoking that they really don't pay much attention to taste. Others however, see a great deal of variety. The taste of a cigar is truly unique, and can be a very personal experience for a smoker. Many different factors come into play in the making of a good cigar. First, we have the leaves, as well as the wrap and the country of origin. The wrapping and rolling style is also important.

Fermented tobacco is tightly wrapped and the leaves are matured beforehand with heat. The ending result is a unique taste and scent that only has a minimal amount of sugar and water content. The curing process takes about 45 days. The fermentation process demands a great deal of attention, particularly in selecting a humidor and keeping the right humidity. After this stage, the leaves are gathered and sorted, based on their appearances. Then they are moistened and prepared for rolling.

There are many types of cigars today, and some of the best cigars are handmade cigars. Cheaper "stogies" are usually rolled by machine and not by human hands. Specially shaped knives may be used to form the filler and the wraps. When it is time for storage proper humidity and airtight sealing are necessary. There are many countries that produce fine cigars. Each cigar varies in taste according to leaf type, size, shape and leaf wrap.

What types of rolling is there to choose from? Longer cigar rolling is often preferred, though short cigar rolling is also commonly sees. Shorter cigar roller usually sees chopped leaves and pulp paper. Not all hand-rolled cigars are of superior quality. It really depends on each company's commitment to quality. Some international rollers have amassed great acclaim for their style of cigar rolling.

The standard method of rolling involves using even filler and using adhesive to bind the binder leaf (in between tobacco leaves and the wrap) in place. The excess leaf is trimmed, and the wrap is smoothed out. Alternatives include a thin rectangular style, pig-tail wraps, book style or scroll-like, entubar, and special cigar mold wraps. Other methods of rolling include leafing, cracking, oowop, pencil packing, sharf packing, blunts, cones and crutches. There is great variety of cigars and you never truly become a cigar enthusiast until you've had the opportunity to taste and smoke them all.
