Differences Between A Mens And A Ladies Bike

By:

When it comes to bicycles, many people assume that a mens bike is the typical machine you see on television ridden by road racers in the Tour de France; and that the ladies bicycle is a slow, heavy bike with a steeply sloping top tube, a rider sitting in the upright position, and maybe even with a wicker basket attached in front of the handlebars. Well that view is little bit stereotypical these days, and if you dont believe me, just ask any of the female Olympic cycling gold medalists! They power around the velodrome on fixed gear bikes that look every bit the same as the mens. Learn to be a Top Cyclist like Olympian and National record holding Cyclists - http://bit.ly/99hmvY

Although vintage ladies bicycles have not disappeared completely, they are not the only bikes available to the girls these days. It is still important though, to remember that even though womens mountain bikes or hybrids or road racing bikes have a similar appearance to the mens version, they are not identical. In other words, they should not be used interchangeably, as there may be some important safety implications.

Back to the retro look bicycles. These are great for lazy summers days riding for fun in the countryside, and other purely leisure cycling. They are also appropriate for the more mature female, as it is very easy to mount the bike, just by stepping over the frame, rather than attempting to stretch a leg over a higher top tube.

For some girls who might be a great deal more athletic, and where leisure cycling means tearing up the road, then there are ladies racing bicycles. The differences between these and the mens models are found everywhere on the bike. Anatomically, the female torso is shorter than that of the male, so on a womens racer, the top tube is designed to be shorter. This modification brings the handlebars and the saddle closer together, so that the female rider can reach with ease and control the bike properly. Most other bike parts are simply smaller versions of those used by the men. For example, the handlebars will generally be narrower and made from a smaller diameter of tubing. The brake levers will be set closer to the handlebars so they can be reached without having to strain the fingers. The crank arms and pedals are usually slightly smaller on the ladies bicycle. And of course, the saddle will be different as there is normally a cut out section in the center for extra comfort.

If you are in the process of buying a new bike, it is worth checking some of these parts, particularly the frame geometry and brake lever reach distance. Some disreputable sellers will simply try to sell off the previous seasons mens stock in the small size, by trying to convince the unwary that they are buying a womens specific design bike.
