Difference Of 3d And 4d Pregnancy Ultrasounds

By:

Soon to be parents especially first-timers are excited to have even a glimpse of the future member of their family. Modern technology today can make that possible through 3D or 4D pregnancy ultrasounds. There are at least 3 types of baby ultrasounds: 2D and the new 3D or 4D but, what is the difference between the last two ultrasounds?

3D ultrasound is similar to the traditional 2D ultrasound; both utilize sound waves that are coming from the baby and use these waves to generate an image. The difference between the two is that 2D baby ultrasounds generate only straight down waves that gives a limited view of the baby. While in 3D fetal ultrasounds, waves come from several different angles making the image from the sound generated waves more detailed. The computer software that processes the 3D sound waves generates a very clear image of the baby. It helps make diagnosis of abnormalities and malformations a lot easier.

4D pregnancy ultrasounds on the other hand, are similar with 3D ultrasounds except that with 4D, movements of the baby can be recorded and be seen including his facial expressions. Manufacturers of this model do not promote it for medical use, but rather capitalizes it as a rare bonding experience with the mother.

Although some studies show that there is no direct advantage in having 3D baby ultrasounds, there are some indirect benefits to count. One of which, is its influence to teenage pregnant women who are considering having abortion. In fact, it is also being utilized by non-government and charitable institutions in its advocacy against abortion. 3D ultrasounds are also used as a means to strengthen the mother and child bonding as a preparation for labor and delivery.

Pregnancy ultrasound of California is a bit expensive than the traditional 2D ultrasound. But, this milestone is a priceless event for both parents that no amount of money can compare. So spending for a baby ultrasound that is worth $120 to $400 is acceptable for excited parents. This deal can also come with many freebies and add-ons.

3D fetal ultrasounds have been facing controversy with its use. There were claims of negative effects of the sound waves to the fetus. This however, has been explained scientifically, that the use of 3D or 4D ultrasounds is much like that of 2D ultrasound. 2D baby ultrasounds have passed the FDA standards for obstetrical use, meaning it has also passed the Obstetric's society standards which makes it safe for the mother and the baby. It was stated that the factors that may place an increased risk would be the duration of fetal ultrasound exposure, intensity of the sound waves and the frequency of ultrasound during the entire pregnancy. Factors that an Obstetric Sonologist is aware of that is why it is safe to say that 3D ultrasounds when done as supervised by the physician is generally safe.
