Diets that Work all have one simple concept in common; consuming less calories than your body burns. If you are looking to lean down chances are you eat more than you need right now and that has had you putting on weight ever so slowly over the years. But if you only put on 5 pounds a year, within 5 years you are carrying 25 pounds too much. Its very easy to lose this slow game of attrition.
So lets start making simple changes to start to reduce the calories in your diet. If one pound of body fat is comprised of 3500 calories, you need to eat 3500 less calories than your body burns each week in order to lose 1lb per week. Once you have achieved your desired weight you would simply adjust your diet to add back the shortfall of 3500 calories and then you would have a good long term meal plan to maintain healthy weight.
The best first step is what you drink. Eliminate or at least minimize pop, juice, coffee, dairy and alcohol and drink water instead. Heres a look at the calories you would be eliminating from your diet.
Juice - Only 1 cup of orange or apple juice is 120. Having just one cup of juice once a day adds up to 840 calories a week, roughly 3500 calories per month.
Pop One can of pop is roughly 150 calories depending on the drink.
Milk 1 cup of milk contains 130 calories.
Coffee & Tea 1 fluid ounce of half and half cream contains 30 calories (two individual creamer containers). Multiply that by a couple of coffees a day and over the course of a month you are consuming an extra 1800 calories.
Alcohol A bottle of beer contains typically 150 to 200 calories on average. A shot of liquor varies between 70 to 100 calories on average and then theres the calories in the mix (pop or juice).
No one is asking you to give up your daily coffee or stop drinking alcohol altogether but you can change while not indulging yourself so much. Find a non-fat coffee creamer. Switch to drinking liquor and soda to keep the calories as low as possible when you do decide to have a couple of drinks. Drink calorie free soda. And keep milk and juice to a minimum.
I can guarantee you switching most of your drinks to water is the first and easiest step when designing diets that work for you! Whats more is that there is a myriad of benefits from drinking a decent amount of water in a day (e.g. six 8oz glasses). You help your body expel toxins. You keep yourself well hydrated which helps your skin look healthy and keeps your joints lubricated among other things. And you will also recover quicker from your workouts. Drinking more water just makes you feel and look better!!!
