Diary Of A (knackered) Groom

Seven weeks to go Not nervous, just dreading it I must be looking stressed; my team troop me out for a Thai lunch because Ive spent one too many weekends at a wedding expo. They ask how Im feeling, and Im possibly too honest, Im not nervous, Im just dreading it. (Important note to fiance: Fear is over the wedding logistics NOT the marriage). Emma and I immerse ourselves in the fun stuff and set up our wedding gift list. We do the main list at John Lewis and use my mydeco wishlist to find personal pieces that people can choose for us. Best tip: Don't hold back on your wedding list. Ask for the world and you might just get it.
With six weeks to go... Apron on, time to bake: Only 12 weekend days left and so much to do. Whose idea was it to get married in France without a single French speaker in the family? Photographer, rings, confetti, best man chosen, guest list, honeymoon. Tick. But cake? I'd joked with the motherinlaw that I'd make the wedding cake, and she's held me to it! I bought the tins and icing from mydeco at the weekend and they were delivered in time for some overnight baking on Tuesday and Wednesday. Top layer: teeth-crushing hard. But no one eats the top anyway, right? With five weeks to go... Dressing as a woman: I left my two burnt fruit cakes at home (!) and went on my stag do. Gorge scrambling, clay pigeon shooting, fancy dress and drinking... it was the first time Id switched off from wedding planning autopilot. I now understand why the stag and hen weekend thing has come about to give the bride and groom a break!
With four weeks to go... Everyone breathe in: Thoughts turn to the venue, a friends place in France. We cant visualise how it will look or whether our 130 guests would fit! Inspired by the creative forces in the mydeco community, I design our wedding reception using mydeco's 3D Complete Room Planner. Lucky thing too because we realise it would be far too tight a squeeze! Cue a hasty booking for a marquee in an adjoining courtyard to extend the area. I thought about giving my salary back to mydeco that week in thanks the 3D tool was a lifesaver! Best tip: Save yourself grief use our 3D Complete Room Planner to check your venue is big enough. With two weeks to go... DIY dreaming: The girls are off to their final dress fittings and I set to printing our orders of service (I get all the important jobs). Seeing that things are being bought on our wedding list, I start dreaming of where all these great things are going to fit in our flat. I rearrange the room using the 3D Complete Room Planner and am quite chuffed with the result. Start looking forward to DIY-filled weekends WITHOUT a wedding to plan.

Five days to go... Panic stations: It's all nerves and sheer mayhem with final wedding jobs squeezed between preparation for three weeks off work. The mydeco gang sends me off with an iconic Alvar Aalto vase. Its a beautiful gift that we can always keep and remember when I was cool, knew about design, and worked for mydeco. Please dont comment on that. The big day... Without a doubt, simply the best day of our lives. Emma looked unbelievably beautiful and it was a perfect 33 degree day - even at 6pm! A few hiccups (we forgot the orders of services...), but well worth the stress, sleepless nights and hopeless baking. Most of the guests were still there at 2am, and I had to ask the DJ to kill the music to get rid of them - a pretty cool thing to do on your wedding day and proof it was a good party! Smug marrieds... I've now got a ring on my finger, a beautiful wife on my arm and a two week honeymoon in a luxury resort in the Maldives.Best tip for grooms: If you've got cold feet, check out the weather forecast in the Maldives. Enough said.
