Diagnosis Of Obsessive

Are you obsessive? Are you compulsive? How would you know? Well, first: do you keep having repetitive ideas, impulses or thoughts, the same ones over and over again. That is called 'obsessions' that involve your mind, ideas, impulses.

Help for OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is relatively new as a diagnosis. People have suffered from this condition for generations without adequate help. As this condition gained recognition, innovative approaches were used to address the symptoms associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The obsessions and compulsions sometimes may be related but sometimes they aren't and at such times the affected person seems to be going nuts. A person with higher level of OCD reflects a distressing feeling at all times and can move to extremes due to a lot of fear. The obsessions keep growing and these can result to a lot of time consumption for the person to complete any task because of their repetitive behavior. Resisting of compulsions is really very difficult for these people suffering from OCD.

The following table based on a National Institute of Mental Health study, lists seven major psychiatric disorders and shows how much each one increases an individual's risk for drug addiction. Psychiatric Disorder Increased Risk For Substance Abuse Antisocial personality disorder 15.5% Manic episode 14.5 Schizophrenia 10.1 Panic disorder 4.3 Major depressive episode 4.1 Obsessive-compulsive disorder 3.4 Phobias 2.4

Accept that you have a medical condition which has psychological and behavioral manifestations. I do not believe that anyone, given what we know today about OCD, can argue that it is anything but a primary medical condition. An individual's lack of internal resources to manage the symptoms is what therapy and medication fulfill. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever been "cured" of OCD. Rather, we aim for symptom reduction.

We must admit that all mental disorders, however distinctive their given names, are members of one large dysfunctional family. This family is so huge that I question the merits of memorizing all its members' names and faces.

Explanations for These Behaviors

Although great strides have been made in autism research, there are not yet concrete explanations for these behaviors. Researchers theorize that perhaps the sameness and order that obsessive behaviors bring foster some stability in a world of otherwise confusing sensory stimulations. Autism seems to cause an imbalance in the senses: if a child cannot process his environment through his senses, the world is a confusing place. Routine, then, is comforting.

You should also make sure that your school and teachers are kept well informed so that they can accommodate your child's needs. This condition is not as rare as many people think, so there's a good chance the school will have experience with childhood OCD.

According to statistics, 7,000,000 in the U.S. or almost one in every fifty Americans have or will have this complex anxiety-based disorder. Just as with most health conditions, other disorders may co-exist with OCD, complicating the diagnostic process. These accompanying disorders may include: substance abuse, depression, attention deficit, or others. It's interesting to know that while compulsive obsessive disorder usually is diagnosed in the teens or early adulthood, even pre-school age children have been diagnosed.
