It is easy enough to follow any diet for a short period of time but when you have to follow a life-long diabetic diet you will discover that there are a number of barriers which will hinder you in your efforts. The secret therefore to starting a diabetic diet is to understand just what these barriers are and to focus your mind on the benefits of your diabetes diet.

The sort of barriers that you are likely to encounter include:

* Cost. Purchasing fresh fruit and vegetables is not cheap, especially when you are buying 'out of season' imported products. But remember that, as your consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables goes up, you are also lowering your consumption of expensive convenience foods and snacks such as potato chips, so that the two will tend to even out.

* Culture. Food is far than mere sustenance and for a lot of us it is also very much an expression of culture. Happily, there are various different ways to prepare food and you will discover that there are many superb diabetic cookbooks focusing on food from different cultures.

* Social Pressure. Getting your family on your side should be reasonably easy but it may not be quite such an easy process to bring other people on side. It should be easy enough to inform your extended family and close friends about your dietary needs and avoid embarrassment at dinner parties and other gatherings where food is served, but there are inevitably going to be occasions when you find yourself in a social situation and are tempted to try a piece of home-made gateaux.

In this situation it is a case of planning ahead and deciding just what you will do before the event. You could decide for instance to have a small piece of gateaux and simply adjust your diet for the remainder of that day to compensate. As an alternative, you could choose to eat before you go out or to take your favorite snack along, plus a bit extra for other people to try.

* Family. members of the family could find it difficult to accept a different diet and they may be less than happy with your 'alternative' quiche. In this case it is best to simply sit down with the family and discuss your diabetes and just what it means in terms of your diet. In the vast majority of cases your family will be more than supportive once they understand your position.

In whatever manner you choose to tackle these barriers, they need to be faced and overcome. This should not be too difficult with a bit of thought and some effort, but it will also help if you focus your mind on some of the benefits of following your diabetic diet:

* Better weight control. With your diabetic diet you will avoid overeating and eating food which is likely to cause weight gain, allowing you to keep your figure and also lowering the risk of other health problems such as stroke and heart attack.

* Lower your risk from low blood sugar levels. The is a tendency to think of diabetes in terms of high blood sugar levels but a number of diabetics also experience the difficulties linked to low blood sugar levels, such as, weakness, dizziness, sweating and irritability, and may even fall into a diabetic coma. Your diabetic diet will keep you on a regular pattern of eating which will lower this risk significantly.

* Feeling better. Without your diet there is a good chance that you will overeat, and eat the wrong type of food, raising the level of sugar in your blood and making you tired and generally unwell. With your diabetic diet however you will feel much healthier.

With the right diabetic diet, and a bit of exercise, you will discover that you can keep your diabetes under control and enjoy a full and normal life.
