Diabetic And Pre-diabetic, There's A Nut In Your Future

By:

Harvard School of Public Health's researchers took a multiyear look at the association of diet and disease. Out of the study came the discovery that nuts seemed able to retard the development of diabetes.

Up to eighty percent of a nuts calories come from fat. Fortunately the fat is of the unsaturated type, and therefore good for us. It appears the nutrients in nuts increase the bodies control over glucose and insulin.

In the Harvard study, nut eaters had a 16 percent reduction in the risk of developing diabetes if they ate 1 to 4 ounces of nuts a week. Those women who ate five or more ounces of nuts a week saw a 27 percent reduction in risk of diabetes compared to the initial group.

What about peanut butter? Sure enough, women who ate at least 5 ounces of peanut butter a week had a 20 percent lower incidence of diabetes than women who seldom had the sandwich spread.

About peanut butter, peanuts are legumes and not true nuts, but they have many of the properties of nuts so they are useful here.

If you are considering adding nuts to avoid diabetes, or to reduce your need for treatment if you have diabetes, lower your bread or red meat portions to offset the added calories from nuts. Adding nuts without compensating in another area will result in weight gain.

Things come to mind when reading articles like this - in this case the problems of rancidity and herpes

Years ago a study was organized to determine if jars of peanut butter on market shelves in an average store contained some rancidity. All of the tested samples proved positive for rancidity. Assuming that is no longer true we are reminded that exposed oil in a warm environment will become rancid, so keeping the jars in a cool place is paramount. Rancid oils are very damaging to all tissues.

Next, nuts, including peanuts have a bad habit of stirring up herpes outbreaks. This is due to, at least in part, to their content of Arginine, an amino acid famous for stimulating herpes growth. In particular I'm speaking of genital herpes. Genital herpes can appear anywhere on the body including inside the brain causing fatigue, depression and headaches. Most often in appears on the buttock. It can break out on the fingers, rib cage, and in the back where it causes upper, but usually lower back pains.

Assuming none of the above problems affect you, then nuts can be a great way to reduce risk of becoming diabetic, or a tool to reduce your treatment needs. One way or the other, nuts can be a good approach to eating less fast foods.
