Diabetes

With the holiday in full swing I bet you've started falling into the sugar trap. That endless line of wonderful fudges and candies of all kinds. All the wonderful cakes and pies and things that we know our bodies don't need. I try to eat a minimal amount of sugar, it's hard not to eat any. My mother was a diabetic for over 35 years. Her parents both were insulin dependent diabetics. My greatest fear was inheriting all the family illnesses. Diabetes is a illness that I hope to be able to avoid. While some illnesses are avoidable some are inherited. So if you are one of those people that have Type 1 (childhood diabetes) I'm sorry. But for those of you who don't keep it that way, There is a vitamin supplement especially formulated for diabetics called Optimum Diabetics Formula.
as a child I thought how great is this. "I can eat all the candy I want and it's o.k."It didn't take long to realize you can get to much of a good thing. remember the first time you ate to much of something and got sick? I do and I still feel nauseated thinking about it! Every year more people are diagnosed with diabetes. After doing a lot of research, I realize, it has become a epidemic in this country. It's alway been one in my family. The Wikipedia encyclopedia says that from 1990 -2005 the numbers have doubled. It is estimated that 7.8 percent of our 23.6 million U.S. Population have diagnosed diabetes. There is no telling how many have it and don't know it. Of that 23.6 million 10% have Type 1.
Lets discuss the Types.
Type 1- Most commonly called childhood diabetes, but is not only a childhood disease. It can be found in adults. There is no preventative solution to avoid Type 1 although I wish I could say there is. Don't you hate it when the doctor tells you whats wrong and you need a translator, I've broke it down, the best treatment for diabetes is to understand it,
Type 1 diabetes is a auto immune disease. meaning our immune system attacks our beta cells, (insulin producing cells) in the pancreas, maybe due to a virus or infection, It sees your beta cells the same way it see the virus, It attacks and kills those good cells. Now your immune system has destroyed the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, Research is working on trying to reverse this immune system malfunction but to date the damage is permanent.
The Pancreas is the organ which controls our blood glucose levels. When those cells in the pancreas are destroyed you have a rise in the sugar levels in your urine often called sweet urine, raising what the doctors refer to as your renal threshold, Sometimes causing renal kidney failure. When they rise above a certain level you will urinate more and drink more than is normal. These are 2 common symptoms of the disease.
Some early warning signs of Type 1 Diabetes.
Frequent urination accompanied by unusual thirst.
Extreme hunger.
Rapid weight loss with easy tiring, weakness, and fatique.
Irritability, nausea, and vomiting.
If you experience any of these symptoms. Please see your doctor because type 1 diabetes untreated can be fatal . The treatment of Type 1 is totally different from Type 2, despite the similarity of the complications.
Many studies have theorized about the reason's for the onset of Type 1 but no one knows really why, theories are that it is inherited as well as enviromental. at least your not making yourself sick. That brings us to type 2.
After reading about type 1 you now know 90% of that 23.6 million have type 2.
Type 2 Diabetes formally called-non insulin dependent diabetes,or adult onset. meaning we acquired the disease when we are adults and the older we get the more chance we have of getting it. It is characterized by high glucose levels. But if we manage our diet and continue to exercise and try to keep our weight down it is controllable. But if the disease is allowed to progress,medication/insulin dependency may be necessary.
The main reason that type 2 has skyrocketed in recent years is the increasing rate of obesity in our children. My mother had type 2 diabetes, I am hoping that I can avoid it and help my future family generations avoid it. Type 2 will absolutely destroy your system. It causes malfunctions in almost all you major organs, and both types effect the cardiovascular system.
Early Warning signs of type 2
frequent urination accompanied by unusual thirst.
Blurred vision or any change in your sight.
Tingling or numbness of the feet, legs or fingers.Eating right is crucial for diabetics.
Frequent skin infections or itchy skin.
Slow healing of cuts and bruises.
Drowsiness.
Vaginitis in Women. Most common are Yeast Infections and Bacterial infections. It can cause erectile dysfunction in men.
Please see your doctor and have your blood glucose levels checked if you experience any of the symptoms. Early detection of type 2 can mean the difference in a long healthy life, and a slow painful death. I'm opting for the first one.
I've tried to explain the types so you may better treat yourself. My site deals with trying to prevent disease and improve your quality of life. That being said, the numbers on type 2 are plain to see. 90% of diabetes cases could be avoided. We all know we should eat better and keep our weight down. I know it's hard, the reason I know is I cared for my mother and my uncle. My uncle was like a second father to me, after my mother and father divorced when I was very young, My father, my brother and I lived with my grandparents and my uncle for quite awhile. . If you added up the years from that time till I was married, almost half my life was spent in that house. My husband and I bought the farm next door. By then my grandfather had been dead for about 10 years. My grandmother was thrilled she had her little girl back, Uncle was thrilled too because he had me back and my husband, he was like having a son of his own. He never married, He's was my daddy's oldest brother, and we were the children he would never have,
In time my grandmother developed alzheimer's disease and spent the last 2 years of her life in the nursing home, while my uncle worked a public job, took care of the old family farm, with the help of the family. The doctor had warned him of his borderline diabetes, gave him a prescription he took daily, but he failed to control his sugar intake, he loved cakes and cookies and mountain dews. Sugar is found in things that are not sweet too. There are normal everyday food that turn to sugar in your system. I would clean his house once a week after my grandmother went to the nursing home, I would throw away a trash can full of Mountain Dew bottles. Still he ignored the warnings. After a doctors visit that yielded some very disturbing news about how the sugar levels were effecting his organs, he came to me. He did try to eat better but the situation was very serious by the time I was able to alter his diet. His vision was deteriorating, his feet had almost no feeling in them. But that's was just the beginning,
I was at home one afternoon and he drove up in my driveway, I hadn't seen him for a few days I wondered where he'd been. He said he had been sick and had spent a couple of days in bed. He was so sick that day he couldn't fix himself anything to eat, he got in his truck and came next door to my house. I told him I would be right over. He ask me if I would look at his foot it hurt a little but with little feeling in his feet from the diabetes he didn't know why. He slid his foot out of his old slipper and turned it over, What I saw I was not prepared for. He had a hole in the bottom of his foot the size of a quarter, in the center around the wound was so full of infection that it was black , It was swollen and inflamed. We went straight to his house. I told him what the problem was but he refused to see the doctor till the morning, he said, he just felt so bad he couldn't. I did what my grandmother would have done, the only thing I knew to do, I soaked his foot in a strong solution of epsom salt water as hot as he could stand it while I fixed him something to eat. After a long soak I dressed his foot and and made him comfortable for the night. I found a tack nail sticking in the bottom of his shoe, It was sticking 3/4 of a inch up in his foot everytime he put his shoe on, he hadn't even felt it because of the effects of the diabetes.
The next morning I called my dad, He took him to the doctor as soon as possible. They sent him straight to the hospital. By that evening they had removed half of his foot. The doctor told me later, If we hadn't soaked his foot in the epsom salt and pulled some of that infection down and away from his heart he probably would have died. my grandmother always used it for everything even to make the flowers bloom. The reason he was so sick was the effects of the infection, The doctor said by the severity of the foot he figured it had been in the shoe around 2 weeks or longer. In the next few days he endured 2 more surgeries, removal above the ankle, and the last and final One just below the knee. He spent many days in the hospital to fight the infection. After returning home my family closed up our house packed our bags and moved back into the house I was raised in. They took care of me when I needed someone, It was my turn to return the love I had been given. After alot of long hours on all our parts he was able to get back on his feet. One was his the other a Prosthetic.
