By far one of the biggest misnomers about diabetes is the fact that it is something hits only those that are obese and only later in life. In general those in America are eating more junk foods and carbs then ever before in the history of man and as a result diabetes is a growing problem amongst those younger individuals in this country and is not merely a problem that affects those in their golden years.

Most people know that this disease is caused by the body not producing enough insulin which is what is needed to breakdown the sugar in the body. Too much sugar is leads to diabetes. There is more sugar in the modern day diet than ever before. A can of soda has spoonfuls of sugar. Let's face it - sugar make foods taste sweeter and food companies what you to enjoy what you eat so that you will continue to purchase their products. Sugars are found in high fructose corn syrup and this is a common ingredient in many of the food products we consume.

Type II diabetes can be controlled by exercising and reducing the amount of sugar and carbs you are ingesting. Type I requires taking insulin, however, you may be able to reduce the amount of insulin you need to take by diligently watching the amount of sugars and carbs you eat so that you can keep your blood sugar low. If you have to have a sweetener then try one of the many artificial products that are currently on the market today.

Parents need to be conscious of the food they are allowing their children to eat and limit their sugar. Fries at fast food places often soak them in sugar water before frying them. We don't want to place our children in conditions where we know put them in harm's way especially diseases they can develop now if it gets out of control or later on in life. Those who have diabetes in their family history should be especially careful.

One you have diabetes, you will need to routinely check your sugar levels and know when to give yourself insulin to bring it more in line. Maintaining a healthy diet can help you to live a healthier and longer life regardless of having diabetes. By ignoring your sugar levels you leave yourself open to major medical issues and possibly death.
