Diabetes And How It Affects Mens' Health

By:

You just can't talk about health without talking about lifestyle. Your choices day after day have a huge impact on your health, for better or for worse. Although diabetes is an inherited disease, whether or not you get it (and how well you manage it) is largely determined by your lifestyle.

Some lifestyle factors that affect diabetes are physical activity level and eating habits. If you are careful to take care of yourself in these ways, you can sometimes avoid getting diabetes at all. If you have already been diagnosed with the disease, you can focus your lifestyle to better control it.

To control or prevent the onset of diabetes, physical activity is very important. You need to get out and do something physically active every day, or as often as your schedule allows. Playing sports can be an enjoyable way to keep exercise interesting, and most cities offer relatively inexpensive all-male or intramural leagues and tournaments in various sports.

For those who are not as interested in organized sports, walking, biking, hiking, or skiing can be rewarding alternatives. Involving family members can also make these kinds of activities worthwhile. It may also be helpful to pay for gym memberships that will give you access to weight machines, treadmills, and pools for swimming.

The other part of preventing or controlling diabetes is carefully controlling eating habits. This doesn't mean that you have to automatically cut out all of your favorite foods! Rather, it means paying attention and eating responsibly on a daily basis.

A few basic principles can help you figure out what kinds of foods to eat. The first principle is to remember to include fresh produce in every meal. This means eating whole fresh fruits rather than canned or processed ones. It also means eating non-starchy vegetables as a regular part of your diet. Some examples of non-starchy vegetables are broccoli, greens, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and many more.

The second principle is to avoid eating refined grains and sugars and opt instead for whole grains and natural unrefined sugars. Eating this way helps your body to digest food slowly, which is the healthy way. Refined foods are digested too quickly, and eating a lot of them can sometimes lead to the onset of diabetes and problems controlling diabetes once it has been diagnosed.

Changing your lifestyle is always difficult, but it may be necessary if you want to avoid diabetes and all of the problems it can cause to your health and to your life.
