Dhobi Ghat Roars As Bollywood Soars

Every week there are a number of movies releasing in the theatres, people are watching and going. But seldom, it happens that a film drags you to the theatre and then after watching the movie you still have it played over and over in your head. One such movie is Dhobi Ghat. The movie leaves a fossil inside your grey matter which is going to stay for quite some time.

Few months back we saw the trailer of Dhobi Ghat and everybody went gaga over it. Why? Because its an Aamir Khan production with Aamir Khan in it, having said that, it is also the maiden venture of Aamirs spouse Kiran Rao. Dhobi Ghat is an unusual 95-minute film without a hiatus, unlike the day-to-day Bollywood masala movies. Considering Mumbai is the city of dreams, millions of people throng to the city of dreams and try to achieve their bit in the less possible time. And to cover the whole idea in a span of 95-minute is what you call brilliant film making.

Some might beg to differ that it aint a good movie after all. We have to consider this as yet another Guzaarish. It aint about heroes, villains, songs, thrills and chills etc. the core matter is witnessing LIFE on the silver screen. So, this might not connect well with the masses, but this ones certainly for the classes.

Dhobi Ghat, the film revolves around four people from different backgrounds: Arun (Aamir Khan) is a painter, who's a complete loner. Shai (Monica Dogra) is an investment banker from America, who is on a sabbatical. Zohaib alias Munna (Prateik Babbar) is a dhobi by day, rat killer by night and a wannabe actor in between. Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra) is a naive and shy newlywed.
The four stories get entwined with the fifth character, Mumbai, the city of dreams, hope, life and survival.

Its an art film on the whole. Talking into perspective the performances of all the actors i.e. Monica Dogra, Prateik Babbar and Kriti Malhotra has been top notch, but the one that stands out for me was Prateik Babbar. Watch out for this hunk, this guy is sure to make a huge impact in the Bollywood film fraternity. Prateik has done total justice to his character, but thats not the thing which takes you by surprise, the one that leaves you awestruck is the effortlessness in his act. Prateik gets under the skin of the character with ease and performs superbly. Aamir Khan is as always marvelous at what he does. Kiran Rao has surely proved to the world that she is the better half of the perfectionist in Bollywood. Kiran Raos direction has been spot on.

Though the film has no songs as such but Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan has managed to pull out yet another magnum opus in the form of Oscar-winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who is responsible for the soulful euphony of Dhobi Ghat throughout the movie.

Being an art film Dhobi Ghat doesnt slacken or lose pace. On the contrary, it unfolds almost like a mystery, like a rose bud, only to coruscate the sanity in full bloom. It thus might become the low budget Bollywood film that will finally make money like big-budget Bollywood fare.
