Dexter: The Process Of Turning To A True And Transparent Psychological Camouflage

By:

The TV Show Dexter is adapted Jeff Lindsay's novel 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter'. Dexter had been abused and abandoned in his childhood. Now, Dexter is a successful forensic pathologist. His another secret job is to track and kill those who had escaped from the cruel justice of the heinous criminals.

As many people scoffed, this may be a commonplace story. The story has repeated one point: Dexter's mental state is not normal, so in order to live in the normal world, he has learned to disguise. At first, I felt very strange, because this disharmony can not be covered by hiding the truth. I was curious how the writer would continue this story. But the fact is that, Dexter was not a complete camouflage person in the episodes which have been aired. In a way, he acted through kinds of his specific behaviors to divergent his own specific interests. Besides this, he had no difference from the normal people. Because he accepted the concept of 'disguised' as child, he can not express his real feelings in some cases--afraid of getting hurt and speculation. Dexter's brother is an abnormal killer, who had not received the concept of 'disguised' as child. His mrdering behavior was caused by hiding rather than camouflage. His affection on other occasions was real, so his brother would rather live in a society more like a normal person.

If I was the director, I certainly would not continue to extend this concept of Psychological Camouflage. I would get rid of this concept gradually through the events of the conflict and the maturity of the individual. Then, I could help Dexter to find a way to lead his vent back to some special but normal behaviors. That is, I think the camouflage itself is a very false conception. No one can deceive any person for a life long time. TV Show itself is an art of enlarging the details of life. If the show is assumed to continue with the concept of camouflage, Dexter will be very very tired, and so will the writer himself. As a result, the plot is knowingly not in line with the development of the personality, even though drama needs conflict, there is no need to deliberate.

Personality is probably affected by the composition of the environment and life experiences. There was a time I thought it was wise to forget the past and have a new beginning. But people can not escape from their own experiences, there are something like defences existing in their subconscious deeply. For example, Dexter had been abused in his early age, therefore he can not forget those experiences and addict to the stimulation of the blood. His father noted his Mental Haemophilus and led him to be a 'judge' to in accordance with the "conscience."
