Dexter: Psychopaths - Two Sides Of The Same Coin

A family man. A member of local law enforcement. A helpful neighbor. A serial killer. It seems strange to most that all of these describe the same man, Dexter Morgan. How could something so evil be hidden so well? That is the duality of a psychopath. Horror movies have convinced us that if you're a psychopath, happily murdering away, you must be alone in some remote stretch of woods. But what Dexter shows us is what is far more common; that friendly neighbor down the block, he may be psychopath. Dexter is a prime example of this.

By day, he's been a happy husband, a devoted son, a tireless member of law enforcement cleaning up the streets of Miami. But at night, he cleans up in a far darker way. Since Dexter's adopted father recognized a psychopath in him, he taught Dexter a code. Because of this code, this set of rules to keep up the appearance of being normal, Dexter has been able to function in normal society. But that doesn't mean his true nature is hidden to all.

There have been a few who see clearly behind the facade of Normal Dexter, and catch a glimpse of the dark creature within. However, those who do recognize it, are often met with tragic and bloody ends. The unfortunate demise of those who see him for what he is, is crucial to his survival. His two lives cannot intersect without catastrophe. Throughout the series we have seen that played out time and again. There really is straddling the fence between good and evil in the world of the psychopath.

The true, darker nature has to stay hidden, cleverly concealed in the shell of the alter ego. How exhausting that must be for Dexter. He has to mercilessly protect his secret, yet also defend his fake life. Without the code to keep him safe, and the friends, family, and job to keep him hidden, Dexter would not be able to survive.

It would seem like the two lives should conflict, and destroy each other. However, as we have seen time and again on the show, the two lives Dexter lives often protect each other. Most importantly protecting Dexter. Without the cover of his family, he may have been killed or arrested a long time ago. But without the ruthless urge to kill, and the intelligence to direct his urge, he could have lost his entire family at one time or another to people even darker and more dangerous than himself.

That doesn't mean it's always easy. We have seen how perilous it can be when his two lives run into each other. When you are playing with people's lives, the consequences are sometimes fatal. It's a balancing act every day for the psychopath. How do you keep both lives separate, but functioning? How do you survive if they cross? What do you do if you feel one or the other start to slip away? It is this premise that has kept us intrigue and watching. We're all waiting to see if Dexter slips.
