Devices That Allow For The Proper Maintenance Of A Saltwater Aquarium

By:

Running a healthy aquarium can be one of the most rewarding and fun things you'll ever do in your lifetime. However, exotic fish are extremely time consuming and aquariums take a lot longer to maintain than most people realize. If you live an active lifestyle and have a regular job it might be hard to maintain your tank the way it should be in order for your fish to be healthy and happy.

You probably have a heater, lights, a cooler and maybe even a powerhead pump that increases water movement, by creating a natural current. You also even have protein skimmer, an underrated piece of equipment that helps remove pollutants and keep the water clear. But let's look at a couple pieces of equipment that can help make sure your tank is working properly when you aren't around to enjoy it.

Aquarium Dosing Pumps

An aquarium dosing pump also known as a peristaltic pump is the best device you can use to make sure calcium, iron, liquid vitamins and other minerals are added to water on a daily scheduled basis. If you are not around to make sure these additives added to your tank slowly it can spike the contents and harm your tank. With a dosing pump, the quality of water in your tank will pretty much take care of itself and the only maintenance that is required after you set up your pump is the rare replacement of the hose.

Reefkeepers

A reefkeeper is also a nice device that will control the temperate, lights, chillers, Ph, pumps, ORP, waves and LED moonlights in your aquarium. A reefkeeper can also refill your tank with water if it starts to get low. A quality reefkeeper was have a standby/feed mode that will ensure that fish food won't get taken into the sump filter. It will also help reduce the bio load by maximizing the food eaten by fish and corrals. Some of the nicer reefkeepers have a night mode so that you can configure light to change automatically at night.

You might even find that buying one of these pieces of equipment can be more cost effective in the long run. For example, some reefkeepers already provide water movement so that the need for an additional powerhead pump might not be necessary. Maintaining your tank can be tricky business but with the proper devices it will be a lot easier.
