Development Of Sophisticated Equipment For Temperature Measurement

By:

Thermometers have been one of the early triumphs of science. These are the devices, which have been subjects of steady improvements since their invention in the 16th and 17th centuries to measure temperature or its gradient. Advancing from simple mercury thermometers to digital ones, we have now come to the age of infrared and USB thermometers, depending on the way we want to use them.

Infrared Thermometers

All bodies, living or non living have their own distinct spectrum of radiations and corresponding to that spectrum, a distinct temperature. Mercury thermometers have been in use since time immemorial but, with the increased awareness about the toxic nature of the element, many countries have banned the use of mercury thermometers from medical use if not otherwise.

New age infrared thermometers sample the electromagnetic spectrum of body under study to infer its temperature. If the amount of infrared energy emitted by the object is known in conjunction with certain physical parameters, its temperature can be calculated.

All one needs to do is to point the device towards the object whose temperature is to be measured. This spells immense success for researchers and scientists because now, they do not need to get into any form of contact with toxic substances or unknown materials under study. Non contact infrared thermometers can be used to measure temperature even from a distance. As is true with all inventions of socio-physical importance, portability is a factor that has to be considered. To that effect, handheld infrared thermometers have made their appearance and found widespread use in the medical field owing to their high sensitivity and precision.

Aside from this, infrared thermometers are used to locate survivors in a catastrophe, smart firefighting, and in household appliances to determine cooking temperatures etc. A large enough non contact infrared thermometers placed at a convenient distance from the sun can be used to determine the solar temperature without much ado.

USB Thermometers

These thermometers are extremely useful for scientists and meteorologists. A high sensitivity thermal measuring contraption is coupled with an electrical circuit and digitizes the records of temperature in the analog form. USB communication interface is plugged into a computer to monitor real time temperature data.

In system control, monitoring processes, ensuring safety in engineering units and while being used with devices critical to various applications in other fields, these thermometers are a dream come true. These thermometers are a classic example of technology supporting developments and introducing better gadgets for ease of life. For more information visit: http://www.redfishsensors.com
