Detroit Dining Traditions Grow Big

By:

In the metropolitan Detroit area and throughout Michigan, we tend to take a chubby little guy in checkered pants for granted. The mascot for the Big Boy restaurant chain, with his shiny black pompadour and red suspenders, is a familiar icon as he stands sentinel outside more than 100 restaurants in the Great Lakes State. But beyond Michigan, Big Boy sightings aren't so common.

Big Boy was born at Bob's Pantry in Glendale, California, in 1936, when owner Bob Wian was challenged to dream up a unique hamburger. On the fly, he cut a bun in thirds, inserted two patties and slathered on his special relish sauce. The double-decker burger was an immediate hit with customers, especially a plump little 6-year-old boy who caught Wian's eye. "Hello, Big Boy," called out Wian, and a trademark was born.

The burger, and eventually the restaurant and franchise to follow, was named in honor of "Big Boy," and a cartoon of the youngster's likeness remains the restaurant's logo to this day. Now headquartered in Warren, Michigan, there are more than 450 Big Boy restaurants in the United States and Canada, namely in Michigan and California.

In addition to the signature burger, Big Boy is known for diner-style breakfasts, the Slim Jim (ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and special sauce on a Grecian roll), onion rings, shakes and malts, strawberry pie and hot fudge ice cream cake. Oh Boy!

Big dining adventures in Detroit continue with a variety of restaurants to fit all budgets and tastes. Speaking of taste, it is the only way to learn the nuances of a fine wine. What better place to indulge your palate than Andiamo? The Andiamo Restaurant Group, a family-owned metro Detroit tradition, offers fun and informative tasting events that meld wine, food and fun.

Sommelier Lisa Ribaudo and her wine team lead tours of different wine-making regions, pairing wines with delicacies made by Andiamo chefs. Choose from less formal mixers (great for singles) where 10 different wines are served with light appetizers and lots of socializing; or opt for sit-down tastings with five wines and tapas-style fare. There's always a different theme.

Andiamo Restaurant Group began in 1990 when Joe Vicari bought his first restaurant in St. Clair Shores. Today, that location still boasts views of the water, as well as the newly renovated Bar Lago. The Warren location includes the Celebrity Showroom, which attracts established artists and shows such as Joan Rivers, Regis Philbin, and Tony n' Tina's Wedding. The Sterling Heights restaurant boasts the trendy Ametista Bar, which offers live entertainment Thursday through Sunday. Wine events rotate between locations, and all focus on value wines priced $10-$15.
