Details Matter For A Successful Job Search

By:

The job market is more competitive now than it's ever been. But even though the stock market has crashed, the housing market has fallen, and an election awaits, people manage to get jobs. In order to succeed, job searchers must follow some checklists to leap to the front of the pack.

Details matter - You need to be able to explain your skills and strengths in detail. Have strategic examples prepared that can convince employers you're the best candidate.

Words matter - In politics, a good speechwriter can do wonders for a candidate's success. It's true - successful politicians are often simply the ones who can best deliver speeches that their speechwriters gave to them! Tell people exactly what you have to offer. Be truthful. Use good behavior and judgment.

Cleverness matters - You should be in the right place to meet people that can help you succeed in a job hunt. Look for the people who make the decisions. Offer help in a timely fashion. You'll never get hired if influential leaders aren't thinking of you or your message when decision time rolls around for them. Be alert to the fact that you'll have to put yourself out there again and again.

Persistence matters - Keep on doing this and don't give up. Do not fall into the trap of allowing your attention span and energy level to fall. This doesn't just mean sitting in front of the computer screen for longer periods of time. Get out into the real world and continue your job search using details and strategies. This is the way that a leader is different from a mere bystander.

Applying for every job and talking to everyone you know may sound tempting, but don't do it - do the opposite. Do not allow frustration to overtake you and turn into desperation. Channel existing frustration into a winning strategy. Take all that stress and convert it into stressing the upside.

What do you excel at? What types of jobs allowed you to excel? Think about a time when you have been at the top of your area of expertise. Write down the skills you have learned and all the dimensions they have. Come up with a list of corporations that would be a good career fit for you. Do not wait just to see a listing online. Yes, you can still look online for job postings that catch your eye. But do not make this your only avenue. Go get 'em. Get through to the people who make the decisions. Convince them that you're the most qualified expert around. Make them think about all the skills and abilities you have that can facilitate success for them.

What about industries that are behind the times or extremely narrow? You still have to target - just focus on parallel industry tracks. This means that you should start researching companies similar to the one you used to be at. After that, target this area with discipline.

It's all about applying various tactics and strategy. You must lead your field, but be clever when defining that field. Yes, you will need to change how you think and speak. Do not give up. Keep redefining who you are targeting, take aim, and do not lose sight of the fact that details matter. You will be able to hit your target with accuracy!
