As we all know deserts are generally very dry. Have extreme climates. There are mainly two seasons- summer and winter. During the summers the days are extremely hot and are much longer than the nights. While during winter it vice-versa. The regions have very less rainfall. Due to this fact, very few plants grow in this region and hence it is not good for vegetation. When we go very general, we can see that deserts cover about one-sevenths of the earths land surface. Also, if we look at our maps today, then we will find that the desert contribute to more than 35% of the earths surface. These are mainly classified into three types. The sub-tropical deserts, cold winter deserts and third is the costal deserts. The sub-tropical regions lie between 15 to 30 degree latitude.

As mentioned above, the deserts are very cold during the nights. The days are hot and dry as it receives very less rainfall and thereby very less moisture content prevailing the in the atmosphere. These regions receive an average rainfall of less than 10 inches a year. Therefore, based on the rains these deserts can be further classified into semiarid, arid, extreme arid and rainless deserts. Depending on these classifications the climatic conditions also vary. Even in these conditions, there are few plants like the Xerophytes which grow well there. These can survive with very less water and some of them have deep roots, which grow down from the earth to fetch water.

So having seen some or the features of about desert, lets see some of the prevailing desert regions in the United States and their Living. The North American region is covered with four desert regions. Some of the places from this region are Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Gulf of Mexico. The four deserts covering these places are The Great Basin Desert, The Mohave Desert, Sonora Desert and Chihuahua Desert. These deserts cover the southeast regions of The United States. Most of them lie between The Rockies, The Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains. This place is considered very spectacular as it has National parks and other scenic places to visit these regions. A lot of tourist travel from long distances to visit these places. Now that we have an overview, lets look into some more details about these deserts.

The Great basin as we all know is the largest desert in North America. Some of the places in this desert are Nevada, the western third of Utah, parts of Idaho and Oregon. The desert covers 190000 square miles and is bordered by the Sierra Nevada Range on the west and Rocky mountains towards east. The area receives plenty of rainfall. Snow falls during the winters and as the spring season commences the melts away from the ground.

The Mohave Desert occupies the southern part of Nevada, parts of California, parts if Utah and Arizona. The desert is named after the Mojave Americans and occupies 54000 square miles. Some of the places of visit in this region are Mojave National preserve, Joshua tree and National Park. This is considered a place that has least heat in North America. Some of the highways in these regions are Interstate 15, Interstate 40, US Highway 395 and 190.

Parts of Arizona, California and extends into the main land of Mexico covers the Sonora Desert. This Desert receives the highest amount of rainfall in the area. During the rains the desert is damp and hence cool. The flowers grow depending on the amount of rains the region has for that year. If more rains then you will also find more flowers during the spring. When the desert gets windy, the sand raises and gets tossed creating sandstorms. Mini-tornados move across the desert floor and they most often occur in hot weather.

The Chihuahua Desert occupies Texas, Southern New Mexico, and Western Arizona. This desert is also called the rain shadow desert. The region has relatively high rainfall, calcareous soils and cool winter temperatures support the growth of grasses, yuccas and agaves. Today we get a lot of information on deserts.
