Descriptions Of Different Acne Types.

Let's cover the variety of acne types that exist. Hopefully, after reading a detailed description of the shapes, colors and sizes of acne, you will be able to narrowed down the type you may suffer from. Acne problems can be cured with the right diagnoses and treatment. Acne is a skin disease commonly characterized by pimples which are normally found on the face, back and chest. It forms when the skin pores get clogged with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria. There are a number of types of acne which are based on the disfiguring severity of the condition. Acne vulgaris is the most common type and is usually categorized into mild/moderate and severe.
What are the different types of acne?

The acne vulgaris mild/moderate consists of the following spots:

Papules: Red tender bumps, inflamed with no head. When squeezed, they lead to scarring

Pustules: Appears like a red circle with yellow or white center, inflamed

Blackheads: A black appearance on the surface with a head which occurs as a result of partial blockage of a pore thus allowing some of the trapped bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum (oil) to drain to the surface gradually. The black colour is caused by the pigment of the skin (melamine) which reacts to oxygen.

Whiteheads: A white appearance on the surface of the skin due to complete blockage of a pore hence trapping sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells.

Severe acne vulgaris includes the following spots:

Nodules: These are hard bumps under the surface of the skin. They are much larger spots, extremely painful and long lasting-often several months. If unresolved, they can disappear only to resurface again.

Cysts: These are similar to nodules but filled with pus, painful with presence of scarring. It is advisable not to squeeze a cyst because of the possibility to cause more devastating infections.

Acne Rosacea is very similar in appearance to the two forms of acne vulgaris. It is possible to get confused between the two types of acne but with keenness, they can be easily distinguished. In appearance, acne rosacea is a red rash confined to the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. In most cases, the redness is accompanied by skin blemishes, pimples and bumps. If acne rosecea is left untreated, it can develop into acne scarring on the nose, reffered to as rhinophyma - a condition involving the growth of excess tissue.
What types of severe acne exist?

Though rare, the severe forms of acne are quite complicated, causing a painful experience for the it's victims. Some of the severe forms include:

Acne conglobata is more common in males, it is the most severe and is characterized by several lesions often interconnected with many blackheads. It attacks the face, back, chest, buttocks, thighs and upper arms. The kind of damage caused by this form can be similar to severe acne scarring.

Acne fulminans is an abrupt onset of acne conglobata mostly affecting young men. Fever and aching of the joints is common with this form, in addition to disfiguring acne scarring.

Pyoderma faciale (Rosacea Fulminans) affects females only, usually between twenty and forty years old. It features painful nodules, sores and pustules which often leave an acne scar. The occurrence is very abrupt and can occur on females who may have never experienced acne before. It can cause a lot of pain and damage within a very short time.
