The largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, Ahmedabad is steeped in history and provides access to many of the regions historical sites. One such attraction is the Adalaj Stepwell that can be found in the quaint village of Adalaj.

Dating as far back as 600 AD, stepwells or vavs are common to western India and are structures with elaborate carvings and designs that have steps leading down below ground to a well. Built in order to provide people with a way to get water even during the dry season, these stepwells were used by locals as well as by nomads and merchants when they were in need of a resting place and a drink. While there are estimated to be around 120 of such structures in Gujarat, the Adalaj Stepwell is one of the most popular places to visit.

The village of Adalaj is situated around 18 kilometres from Ahmedabad and its famous stepwell showcases a fascinating Indo-Islamic architectural design style. Constructed in sandstone, this impressive five-storey structure with its octagonal opening and imposing pillars was erected by Queen Rudabai in 1499. The vav which has various deities carved onto its walls was not only a place for locals to get water, but also a spot where they would offer prayers and meet with one another.

Despite the fact that the well at the Adalaj Stepwell is currently dry, visitors to the site can explore this remarkable structure which descends around 200 feet below the ground. Built with the unique design feature of having three entrance stairs, this ancient architectural marvel has intricately carved walls and pillars that depict a variety of birds, fish and flowers as well as portraying scenes from local mythology and activities of women in society at the time. Those looking to take a break from all their exploring can have a rest in the gardens that are found nearby.

Travellers planning a trip to the Indian state of Gujarat can look for a hotel in Ahmedabad. Those wanting to do some serious Ahmedabad sightseeing can stay at The Gateway Hotel Ummed Ahmedabad and use it as a base to explore the region and its many attractions.
