Occasionally a dermoid cyst may rupture. This will cause an irritation in the abdomen that can be extremely uncomfortable. Because a ruptured cyst can cause serious problems, doctors usually remove a dermoid cyst when it is discovered.

When possible, laparoscopic surgery is used to remove the cyst. Sometimes if the cyst is large or hard to remove the ovary may need to be removed as well. But this is avoided when at all possible. Most physicians will take utmost care not to create a situation that would cause infertility.
