Depuy Hip Implant Recall Leads To Questions About Depuy Pinnacle Hip

Now, more and more people are beginning to wonder whether DePuy may have a problem with another DePuy product: the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system. The DePuy Pinnacle hip products were not included in the August 2010 DePuy hip implant recall.

Attention is now focusing on the DePuy Pinnacle hip products, including the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, however, because reports suggest that orthopedic surgeons are discovering that DePuy Pinnacle hip products are failing at high rates, and because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is receiving a growing number of reports perhaps more than 500 such reports in 2010 alone advising of problems with the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system.

DePuys Metal-on-Metal Hip Products

DePuy Orthopaedics promotes itself as the leader in metal-on-metal technology. The recalled DePuy hip implants are metal-on-metal products in fact, it is the metal cup in the DePuy hip implants that appears to be at least part of the problem.

The DePuy Pinnacle Hip Solutions sold by DePuy Orthopaedics also is a metal-on-metal hip replacement product. DePuy says that its Pinnacle hip replacement product is designed to give you the freedom of mobility. Of course, DePuy made similar claims for the recalled DePuy hip implant, but a growing number of people who have undergone DePuy hip implant surgery now recognize the problems with those claims.

DePuy has been selling its Pinnacle hip replacement systems in the United States since before it began selling the recalled DePuy hip implant products. Given the growing concerns and reports of problems with the DePuy Pinnacle hip, one can reasonably wonder whether the Pinnacle hip replacement system will continue to be sold for much longer.

Interestingly, in August 2009, DePuy announced that the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Advisory Committee of the FDA had recommended FDA approval of the Pinnacle CoMplete Acetabular Hip System. DePuy says that this Pinnacle product is the first ceramic-on-metal hip bearing to be considered for approval in the U.S. The FDA does not yet appear to have given approval to the new DePuy Pinnacle product. Given the DePuy hip implant recall, one wonders whether at this time when DePuy is facing growing litigation involving the recalled DePuy hip implant the FDA will approve a hip replacement system for use in the United States that for the first time combines ceramic and metal bearing surfaces.
