Dentures Versus Dental Implants: Which Is Better?

By:

Tooth loss can happen to us as we age. However, aging is not the only reason. Often times, people lose their teeth because of neglect. Either way, having a missing tooth or missing teeth can change your appearance. In fact, it is quite embarrassing. The good news is that the technology of today has provided us means to correct this awful picture. The introduction of dentures and dental implants or teeth implants has made a big difference in the dental health care field. Knowing that you do not have to dwell and be stuck with the humiliation of missing teeth or the difficulty in eating is a great relief.

Today, people have been wondering and debating as to which prosthetic intervention is best: dentures or dental implants. Since both require money and both affect a person's physical and psychological health, it is only appropriate to examine and analyze which is better by looking into their advantages and disadvantages.

Dentures

Let us start with dentures. Dentures were developed first and society is accustomed to this type of intervention. Dentures are a lot cheaper than dental implants and the process of creating the prosthetic is also faster. After a couple of visits, you will have the molded prosthetic. Another good thing about dentures is that, basically, you can have one made for you regardless of your jaw structure or physical health. The disadvantage of using dental dentures is the ease of use or the comfort level of the one using it. Since dentures are removable and sometimes move a little bit, people may have difficulties chewing their food. For the same reason, some people often suffer from the humiliation of having their dentures detached and fall out of their mouth unpredictably.

Dental Implants

In contrast to dentures, dental implants are more securely rooted because they are embedded into the bone socket. The jawbone anchors the prosthetic tooth, which allows the dental implant to appear and feel like the original. With dental implants, you can eat far more comfortably and the possibility of having the prosthetic tooth detached accidentally is eliminated. Though teeth implantation is actually a surgical procedure and it costs more, there is a way around these drawbacks. With sedation dentistry, you can relax in comfort during the dental procedure. You may even forget sitting on the dental chair for a longer time than usual. If you are concerned about not being able to pay for it, you can ask local cosmetic dentists (also known as implant dentists if they offer dental implants) about financing plans.

Contact your local cosmetic dentist to learn more about dental implants and to help you decide if it is appropriate for you. Most cosmetic dentists will provide free consultation and answer any of your dental implant questions.
