Dentists And Dentistry In Movies And Television Shows

By:

Many people have an innate fear of the dentist, and Hollywood has certainly used that to their advantage in many of the movies and television shows that have been made over the years. While there have been many friendly dentists depicted on the big screen, the deadly doctors that strike fear into the hearts of their patients are also a time honored tradition.

One of the most popular scary dentists of all time is Dr. Feinstone, the crazy and insane dentist from the move The Dentist. Played by Corbin Bernsen, Dr. Feinstone is a very successful dentist who goes a bit insane when he finds his wife is having an affair with the pool boy. The good doctor decides the appropriate revenge is to murder both his wife and the pool boy through a horrifying dental procedure.

The Dentist was so popular, Hollywood gave the people wanted they wanted with the sequel The Dentist 2: Brace Yourself. In this second installment, Dr. Feinstone returns after he breaks out of a high-security mental institution he was placed in after his heinous crimes in the first movie. Unfortunately, this second movie keeps the same plot as the first, only this time Feinstone finds his new girlfriend cheating on him, which leads him to more demented dental destruction.

And when speaking of demented dentists, one cannot forget Orin Scrivello, the sadistic dentist portrayed by Steve Martin in the classic comedy Little Shop of Horrors. Scrivello is a dentist who thrives on bringing pain to his patients, until the day that Seymour Krelborn decides enough is a enough and feeds him to the man eating plant that Seymour has found himself in possession of.

As long as the public has a fear of the dentist, Hollywood will definitely use it to their advantage in making horror movies that depict those dastardly devils of the dental world. In reality though, Hollywood needs to realize most of the dangerous dentists they present are actually more humorous than scary, but either way it does make for great entertainment.
