Dentists - Educate Yourself On Them

By:

Dentists are oral health practitioners that play an integral role in the healthcare of every man, woman and child. Unfortunately they are often not the most popular of medical professionals due to the nature of the work they do. Many people postpone or downright neglect going to see a dental provider because they worry that they will suffer pain and discomfort when the doctor is poking around inside their mouth. They also worry about what the healthcare professional will discover and dread the thought of time consuming and expensive treatments.

Despite some of the negativity levelled at their profession, dentists are people that we all need to be healthy. The health of the mouth does not take place in isolation. Often what is taking place in the mouth has a direct connection to what is happening in the rest of the body.

It helps to know a little bit about what these professionals who care for our teeth and gums are all about. A dentist is a healthcare practitioner who can be thought of as a doctor for your teeth. These highly educated and trained individuals provide their patients with both preventative as well as restorative treatments for issues that affect the teeth and gums and the mouth in general. Whether you have a tooth that is hurting, gums that are red and puffy, a cracked tooth or crooked teeth a dental practitioner can assess the problem and can use his/her expertise in this field to determine what course of treatment is most recommended for the situation that has cropped up.

The vast majority of dentists are self employed practitioners who work in general practice and offer their services to members of the general public. Some of them team up with other dental doctors to offer services while others open their own offices. Some providers choose to branch off into specialty areas. Some decide to go into community dentistry or hospital dentistry while others choose corporate practice or decide that their skills can best be used in the Armed Forces. Still others who have a knack for teaching decide to teach dental students in universities and/or to do research in the field.

Most dental practitioners' works in offices that are also made up of a team of staff members who are all working towards the same purpose- the care of patients. These other employees include a dental hygienist, a dental technician, a dental nurse, a receptionist and in some cases a dental therapist.

Dentists have busy days from start to finish. They examine the teeth of their patients and diagnose any conditions they may show evidence of. They are helped by this by the use of X-rays. They also suggest treatment plans to their patients and explain all that is involved in the treatments. They also carry out any number of clinical treatments on their patients such as filling cavities and treating mild forms of gum disease. Dental providers also educate their patients on proper oral health care and hygiene. They also answer any questions that may come up in terms of dental procedures or treatments that the healthcare professional recommends.
