Once dental school is complete, a dentist can practice general dentistry. However, a lot of dentist students will choose a specialized field of dental school to include in their dental school studies. Some examples of dentist specialists are the following dentistry occupations: pediatrics dentist, orthodontic dentist, cosmetic dentist, oral surgery dentist, and maxillofacial surgery dentist. The dentist student can opt to specialize in any of these courses after their fourth year of dental school or after they complete dental school and start practicing dentistry services.

To fill a cavity or get a root canal you would probably just go to your regular dentists office. For teeth whitening and many basic cosmetic dentistry services, a general dentist can do the job. However, if your child had a specific oral problem that required oral surgery you may take your child to the pediatric dentist and the maxillofacial surgery dentist. If you had a problem with missing teeth, you would go to a cosmetic dentist as well as a dentist who could perform dental surgery.
