Dental Procedures Made Easier With Sedation Dentistry

By:

Are you planning to get fillings, veneers or crowns for teeth? Regular dental care is the best way to maintain the health and beauty of your teeth and smile, yet these procedures can sometimes be quite painful. If you are one of the many patients for whom local anesthetic is not good enough, a sedation dentist can help you get the care you need without pain or stress.

Some of the most painful procedures include having teeth removed and getting veneers for teeth that have been chipped or stained. These are some procedures where it makes the most sense to consider sedation dentistry. North Carolina sedation dentists specialize in providing these types of procedures.

Sedation dentistry is not available in all dental clinics. Dentists must undergo specific training and be certified by the North Carolina Dentistry Association to provide sedation. The main reason for this is to ensure that the dentist understands the proper dosage to give patients and understands the potential health risks. Sedation dentistry is not for everyone, and a dentist must know how to discuss the patients background and look for risk factors. Giving the wrong dose to a patient or dosing someone who should not be sedated can cause serious problems.

How does the dental industry prevent these problems? The solution is to make sure thorough training in providing sedative dentistry procedures to only the patients they are right for is required for every dentist practicing sedation dentistry. North Carolina clinics are among the highest quality in the country because North Carolina has high standards for certification and provides its dentists all the support they need to be at the top of their field.

The North Carolina Dental Board is the organization that regulates legal procedures in the dental field such as certifying dentists, accrediting dental clinics, and certifying one to be a sedation dentist. North Carolina dentists who want to practice sedation dentistry must first satisfy the Boards requirements before they can administer sedatives.

The first step that a dentist must do to practice sedation dentistry is to apply for a permit to use sedatives. The official North Carolina Dental Board website has a downloadable link with a copy of the application form that the dentist must fill this out and send it to the main office. Then, the dentist must take a short course in relation to sedation dentistry, undergo trainings, and administer sedatives successfully to ten patients under supervision. At the final stage, the North Carolina Dental Board will send an evaluator to the dentists office and the dentist must answer their questions and explain the sedation procedure in detail. If they pass the evaluation, they will be given a sedation permit and can now start giving sedatives.
