Dental Implants - What To Expect Before, During, Or After Dental Care Treatments

By:

Dental implants are a great way to help your smile look better and be more functional if you are missing teeth or have a great deal of decay. But the idea of having oral surgery can be very scary, especially for people who are nervous about the dentist anyway. Here are the basics of what you can expect when you have dental implants put in by a cosmetic dentist.

Before you have the dental implant procedure performed, the cosmetic dentist will need to visit with you to ensure that you are a prime candidate for this procedure. He will look closely at the condition of your jawbone so that he can determine if you need to have some bone grafting done in order to ensure a successful implantation. Once your cosmetic dentist has determined if you need a bone graft or not, you will have your appointment date set for the procedure.

When you go in to have your dental implant procedure done, you will be given some form of anesthesia in order to control the pain during surgery. Depending on what type of anesthesia you have, you will be told what you should eat or drink the day before and the day of the procedure.

During the surgery, the gum will be cut down to the bone. Holes will be drilled into the bone where the piece, which is known as the dental implant cylinder, will be placed. This cylinder will be your new tooth root. It is implanted deep into the bone so that your new tooth will be strong and sturdy. Once this part of the procedure is done, you will be sent home with a gap still in your teeth. This is so that the cylinder can unite with the jawbone, a process that can take anywhere from two to six months.

Once the cylinder has united with the jawbone, your cosmetic dentist will once again go into your mouth and place the new tooth, filling in the gap and giving you back your beautiful smile. This will complete the dental implant procedure.

You may deal with a bit of swelling or bruising after getting the dental implants, but once the procedure is complete, your new tooth will look just like your normal teeth do, and will give you a much more complete smile.
